Top 20 Posters – 2014

And now a better late than never list. I’ve had very little time to keep the site going, but there are still a few things I want to post, like this list, even in an abbreviated form. So here it is. These are the best posters for films released in 2014.

20. BIG EYES

Simple and clever. It gets the film’s plot across while still using its famous faces to sell the picture.

19. A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT

Introduces a striking new idea with boldness and clarity.

18. A FIELD IN ENGLAND

A retro trip that I dig.

17. CALVARY

Tactile. It clues you into the film’s pulpy religious themes.

16. JOHN WICK

Elegant and badass with an accurate warning for a tagline.

15. COHERENCE

It’s a neat design with enough strangeness to pique your curiosity.

14. THE FINAL MEMBER

Hard to resist a solid dick joke.

13. THE INTERVIEW

Great use of faux-propaganda. Includes actual secret messages.

12. WE GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS PLACE (AKA BAD TURN WORSE)

Gorgeously drawn by the great comic artist Sean Phillips. The poster and title were only used on the festival circuit, but it’s too good to forget.

11. DOM HEMINGWAY

It’s random and hilarious which are two things rarely said of posters.

10. NYMPHOMANIAC

Hard to resist a nice vagina joke. All the character posters were lots of fun too.

9. INTERSTELLAR

The vertical design with the dialogue-turned-tagline work really well. Hope comes through.

8. THE ONE I LOVE

I really like the art and the sly hint at the film’s twist.

7. THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

More great design from the director obsessed with it.

6. NIGHTCRAWLER

It’s not really appealing, almost hinting at the ugliness of the main character. The dot printing is sinister.

5. MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN

I like animated posters and though the film was not well received, this image is great.

4. STRANGER BY THE LAKE

More great art to sell art. Audacious.

3. ENEMY

Precise. Invokes cold war posters.

2. BIRDMAN OR (THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE)

Funny and slick.

1. UNDER THE SKIN

It’s just great design. Great layout. Like the way the title is cut off just a little bit. Like if I look long enough I can solve a mystery I didn’t even know existed. Without a doubt the number one poster that I always stopped to look at if I saw it last year.

Bonus: These two cool Godzilla posters. Just because.

  1. Great post. I love the poster for Under the Skin. The beautiful simplicity. Of course, it helps that it was my favourite film of last year.
