Opening Weekend: Sharks, Lies, and Videotape

This weekend two of my biggest fears–sharks and outer space–face off, while Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson, and Ciarán Hinds play retired covert operatives with a secret.

In The Debt, three Mossad agents are sent into East Berlin to track down a Nazi war criminal… decades later the repercussions of this covert operation come back to haunt them. With Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington, and Marton Csokas playing the younger versions of Mirren, Hinds, and Wilkinson, The Debt looks like an intriguing thriller.

Apollo 18 is a found footage horror film (the high concept label du jour is: Blair Witch in space) about a secret mission to the moon and the “real reason” the U.S. has never gone back.

Then there’s Shark Night 3D… about a bunch of college kids spending their summer vacation feeding the fish at an island lake house surrounded by shark infested waters.

Now, The Debt looks pretty good, and it’s got a great cast, but sharks and outer space are scary… I’m so torn… I’ll definitely see all three at some point. In the end, my money is on Apollo 18, doesn’t look as cheesy as Shark Night 3D, and outer space seems slightly scarier than sharks… sharks in space, that’s another story altogether… truly terrifying.

What are you planning on seeing this weekend? What do you think is scarier, sharks or outer space?
