“Mission:Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Review

[Editor's note: This review was finished while the movie was still in theaters, but it got lost in the fray. So, all the IMAX talk probably doesn't mean much to you now, but it's still a fun movie.]

You might have seen the footage of mega-star Tom Cruise climbing the outside of the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. Or you’ve seen any bit of marketing that has the Burj front and center. But nothing can prepare you for the awesomeness of the final product on a real IMAX screen. It’s a show-stopping moment, skillfully executed and it takes a funny fast-paced action movie and turns it into a must-see event of the highest order. Continue reading

Scared Silly: Top 31 Horror Comedies – Part 5

We made it! Now we have the final 7 of my top 31 favorite horror comedies. Six of these movies were a big part of developing my love of horror, planting the seed of interest in the supernatural and fostering it with humor. Opening Weekend: Keep Your Hands to Yourself

Nick Swardson plays a fledgling porn star, Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton play brothers battling it out, Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis sell the dead, and we’re all gonna die when a deadly virus consumes the world. Fun times. Continue reading

The Trouble with Quibbles: Paul

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are more than just funny best friends with a penchant for pop culture references, they’re also the dynamic duo from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and (the possibly less well-known BBC series) Spaced. The funny fellows have re-teamed to bring us Paul, a geek-tastic sci-fi pastiche, part homage, part fan fiction, part road trip movie. Continue reading

Opening Weekend: Win, Lose or Law

This weekend two-thirds of the team behind Shaun of the Dead & Hot Fuzz have a close encounter of the third kind with a like-minded slacker from the stars. Bradley Cooper shows us both the benefits and side-effects of taking a drug to unlock all your minds potential (I’m pretty sure side effects include: permanent 5 o’clock shadow, perfect hair, and Spike Lee Joints). Also, Matthew McConaughey and Laurence Mason star in a re-imagining of Driving Miss Daisy . . . Driving Mr. McConaughey . . . at least that’s what I gathered from the trailer. McConaughey hangs out in the back of a vintage Lincoln . . . and he’s a lawyer . . . and no, he’s not lobbying to legalize marijuana, but I am pretty sure they do make a stop at the Piggly Wiggly. And Paul Giamatti shows us that Charlie Sheen isn’t the only one who’s winning, duh. Continue reading

My Favorite Films of the Last Decade #6

Ed: I’m not gonna say, you know, “there’s plenty more fish in the sea.” I’m not going to say, “if you love her, let her go.” And I’m not going to bombard you with clichés. But what I will say is this: it’s not the end of the world.

Christopher Pike: Your father was Captain of a starship for 12 minutes. He saved 800 lives, including your mother’s, and yours. I dare you to do better.
