I know this list has been a little foreign/indie heavy so far. What can I say? I don’t understand the appeal of Les Miserables. I promise the rest of my list is (slightly) more populist. Here are the next five.

Today’s checklist focuses on films with acting nominations, specifically the men.

Opening Weekend: Decision(s)

So, unless you happen to live near a major metropolitan area, you don’t really have a variety of movies opening this weekend. Whether the rest of the studios are scared or Marvel Studios just has that much sway these days, I can’t say. All I know is, as far as wide releases, Matthew Vaughn‘s X-Men prequel stands alone this weekend.

Requiem for a Fanboy – A Poster Prelude

One of my favorite things about movies, theater, concerts–any event that needs to be advertised–is the poster. They have to sell something, an entire 90-minute event summed-up with one picture. While the specific qualities and purposes for the posters are often very different, the goal is still the same: to catch someone’s eye and make them remember it. With movies, the process is in overdrive.

I’d Buy That For A Dollar: The Ghost Writer

I didn’t really want to see The Ghost Writer in theaters, despite the solid reviews, 84% at rottentomatoes, academy award-winning director Roman Polanski, and my everlasting affinity for star Ewan McGregor (all cast members from Trainspotting have earned this). The marketing was too off-putting, made it look cheesy, dull, and way too self serious. Well thank goodness for redbox, because I’m here to tell you this is top-shelf Polanski.
