Bryan’s 10 Most Anticipated Films – 2013

star-trek-into-darkness-benedict-cumberbatch

I like treks and robots fighting monsters and steel men as much as the next guy. But when it comes to making this list, I want to see other things a tad bit more. There’s a lot to look forward to but if you told me I could only see 10 new films this year, well the following would be my picks. Continue reading

2012 Fall Preview: 25 Films I Can’t Wait to See #10-6

Bryan’s Top Ten Movies of 2011

As is becoming tradition, I don’t complete my top ten list until a few months into the new year. This is mostly because I’m trying to see everything I missed. This list is late for that reason of course, but also because I was having my friends at Outpost Media put together a video companion (which I think came out looking sweet, many thanks to them). I thought it might be fun. So watch the video, then read on for more context or read first then watch or whatever you feel like doing. Just enjoy. Continue reading

Top 10 Movies We’re Looking Forward to in 2012

Bryan had an idea (read: he stole it from In Contention) for a collective top 10 list of the movies scheduled for release in 2012 that we here at Shooting the Script are most looking forward to seeing. And though Bryan and I don’t always agree–he thinks the LOTR trilogy counts as one timeless classic, whereas I think it’s three boring films that didn’t age well–I was also interested to see what our gang was looking forward to, and figured you might be too. Continue reading

The Trouble with Quibbles: Moneyball

If you’ve been paying attention, then you know that we here at Shooting the Script have been anxiously awaiting Moneyball. The film, based on the book of the same name, tells the true story of Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), general manager of the Oakland Athletics, and his attempt to put together a winning baseball club by the numbers… literally. With the help of Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), Beane sets out to change the game of baseball, using statistics instead of scouts to draft his players. Continue reading

Opening Weekend: No Contest

Taylor Lautner tries to be an action hero. Jason Statham still is an action hero. Morgan Freeman gives a dolphin a new tail. And Brad Pitt changes the game of baseball. Continue reading

The Trouble with Quibbles: The Tree of Life

To me, Terrence Malick seems to be an uncompromising filmmaker. And I mean that as a compliment. I respect him for sticking to his guns. The notoriously elusive director seems interested in nothing more than expressing his ideas, crafting films that are beholden to nothing (and no one) beyond his intentions. He has a clear vision, everything he commits to film is in service of that vision. This holds true with Malick’s latest film, The Tree of Life. The film–starring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and Sean Penn—is a sort of “portrait of the artist as a young man,” questioning the meaning of life, the universe, and everything, wandering through a “story” centered around a suburban family in the 1950s. Continue reading

Opening Weekend: One of These Things Is Not Like The Other Things

It’s Memorial Day Weekend, you know what that means . . .  Time for crowd-pleasing sequels! I never saw Kung Fu Panda, so a sequel means little to me. And while I am interested to see what sort of trouble the wolf-pack gets into this time around, I’m even more interested to see Terrence Malick‘s latest opus. Continue reading

They Call Me MISTER Pitt! – Top 5 Brad Pitt Performances

Terrence Malick’s long awaited, Palme d’Or winning, The Tree of Life is upon us. Since the film stars one Brad Pitt, I thought it a good time to look back at some of his finest accomplishments. (Can’t really do this for Malick, the dude only has 4 other films so you should see all of them.) Yes, Mr. Pitt, the man all women want to be with, and all men want to be . . . and in some cases also be with. My own sexual proclivities aside *ahem* the man has proven time and time again to be more than just an icon, but a damn fine actor. Continue reading

My Favorite Films of the Last Decade #10

Lt. Aldo Raine: …we will be cruel to the Germans, and through our cruelty they will know who we are. And they will find the evidence of our cruelty in the disemboweled, dismembered, and disfigured bodies of their brothers we leave behind us. And the German won’t not be able to help themselves but to imagine the cruelty their brothers endured at our hands, and our boot heels, and the edge of our knives. And the German will be sickened by us, and the German will talk about us, and the German will fear us. And when the German closes their eyes at night and they’re tortured by their subconscious for the evil they have done, it will be with thoughts of us they are tortured with. Sound good?
